A devastating flash flood that suddenly entered Nepal from the Tibetan side of China has caused widespread loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure along the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, and Narayani river corridors.

The disaster began in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa near the Nepal–China border before surging downstream through the Trishuli River and eventually reaching the Narayani River system. The flood arrived with such force and speed that many people living and working along the river corridors reportedly had little or no time to reach safer locations.

Devastation in Rasuwa and Along the Bhotekoshi Corridor

Rasuwa, particularly the northern border area around Rasuwagadhi and Timure, has been among the worst-affected areas.

The flood damaged or swept away roads, bridges, houses, businesses, vehicles, communication facilities, and other critical infrastructure. Several hydropower projects along the Bhotekoshi corridor have also been affected.

The disaster has also severely disrupted the important road connection between Nepal and China. The road corridor connecting the Nepal–China border with the lower areas has suffered extensive damage, creating major challenges for rescue teams and emergency responders.

According to preliminary assessments, around 42 kilometers of road between Betrabati in Nuwakot and Rasuwagadhi have been damaged at various locations. Several bridges have also been washed away or severely damaged.

The destruction of roads and bridges has made it difficult for rescue teams to reach some of the most affected locations.

Situation in Trishuli: Rescue Operations Continue

The situation in the Trishuli Bazaar area of Nuwakot remains extremely serious.

The Nepal Army and other security agencies are continuing aerial rescue operations in the affected areas. Injured people are being treated at the No. 1 Military Training Center in Trishuli, Chakradev Hospital, and other health facilities.

However, the humanitarian situation remains deeply distressing.

Along the banks of the Trishuli River and outside hospitals, relatives of those who have died, gone missing, or been injured are waiting anxiously for information about their loved ones.

The sound of grieving families searching for missing relatives has added another painful dimension to the disaster.

For many families, the immediate concern is no longer property or infrastructure but finding their loved ones.

Death Toll Rises to 17

The latest available reports indicate that the death toll from the Bhotekoshi flood has risen to 17.

Police have recovered bodies from several districts affected by the flood. According to the latest details, six women and eight men are among those confirmed dead, while the identities of three victims have not yet been established.

So far, bodies have been recovered from:

  • Rasuwa – 1
  • Nuwakot – 7
  • Dhading – 6
  • Gorkha – 3

However, the final number of deaths is still uncertain because search and rescue operations are continuing and several people remain unaccounted for.

Police have also reported that 28 police personnel remain out of contact. The total number of missing people, including local residents, workers, government employees, and others, has not yet been fully confirmed.

The number of casualties could therefore change as rescue teams reach areas that remain inaccessible.

Flood Impacted Seven Districts

The flood began in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa and moved downstream through the Trishuli River before eventually reaching the Narayani.

The disaster has affected at least seven districts:

  2. Nuwakot
  3. Dhading
  4. Gorkha
  5. Chitwan
  6. Tanahun
  7. Nawalparasi East

Communities, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities, businesses, and other infrastructure along the river corridors have been severely affected.

As the flood moved downstream, authorities warned communities living near the Trishuli and Narayani river systems to remain highly alert and move to safer locations if water levels began to rise.

What Caused the Sudden Flood?

One of the biggest questions surrounding the disaster is what caused such an enormous volume of water to suddenly enter the Bhotekoshi River.

According to reports appearing in Nepali media, a glacial lake on the Tibet side may have burst, potentially triggering the sudden flood. However, this has not yet been conclusively confirmed by authorities or scientific investigations.

Another preliminary scientific assessment suggests that an ice avalanche or a large ice-and-rock avalanche may have blocked the Lhende River, temporarily holding back a large volume of water before the accumulated water suddenly surged downstream.

Therefore, the exact mechanism behind the disaster remains under investigation.

At this stage, it would be premature to definitively describe the incident as a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). A glacial lake outburst remains one possible explanation, while an ice avalanche or other sudden blockage-and-release mechanism is also being considered.

Further investigation and satellite or field-based assessments will be necessary to establish the exact cause.

Why Was There So Little Time to Prepare?

The sudden nature of the disaster is one of its most alarming characteristics.

Unlike conventional floods caused by prolonged rainfall, where water levels may rise gradually and communities can receive warnings, a sudden release of water from an upstream glacial lake or a rapidly collapsing ice or rock barrier can send a massive volume of water downstream within a very short period.

Roads and bridges have suffered extensive damage, while communication and electricity infrastructure have also been disrupted in several locations.

The economic cost of rebuilding these structures is expected to be substantial.

Beyond the immediate humanitarian emergency, the disaster could therefore have long-term consequences for Nepal's energy sector, transportation network, and local economies.

China Also Faces Major Damage

The disaster has affected areas on the Chinese side of the border as well.

In Tibet's Gyirong area near the Nepal–China border, landslides and flooding have reportedly damaged roads, buildings, electricity infrastructure, and communication networks.

Some buildings have reportedly been buried or damaged by landslides.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has reportedly instructed authorities to accelerate search and rescue operations for missing people in the affected area.

Chinese armed police personnel have also been deployed to support emergency response and rescue operations.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Nepal has activated its emergency mechanism and is collecting information about Chinese citizens and organizations located in the affected areas.

The embassy has also urged the relevant authorities to accelerate rescue operations and issued safety information for Chinese citizens in Nepal.

Rescue Operations Underway

Nepal's security agencies have mobilized large-scale search and rescue operations.

The Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force are working in the affected areas.

Because several roads and bridges have been washed away, aerial rescue has become particularly important.

Helicopters are being used to evacuate people from areas that are difficult or impossible to reach by road.

However, rescue operations remain challenging because of the strong river currents, damaged infrastructure, unstable terrain and continuing risks along the river corridors.

Authorities have also instructed helicopter operators to remain prepared for emergency rescue operations.

The immediate priorities are to locate missing people, evacuate stranded residents, provide medical treatment to the injured and deliver relief materials to affected communities.

Hospitals on High Alert

Health facilities in and around the affected areas have been placed on emergency preparedness.

In Nuwakot, injured people are receiving treatment at the No. 1 Military Training Center in Trishuli, Chakradev Hospital, and other medical facilities.

Bharatpur Hospital in Chitwan has also placed its emergency department on full alert in anticipation of injured people being transferred from Rasuwa and other flood-affected areas.

According to hospital officials, 24 emergency beds, essential medicines, doctors, ICU facilities, and other emergency services have been kept ready.

The Ministry of Health has also allocated 100 emergency beds at Bir Hospital and the National Trauma Center in Kathmandu for flood victims.

Several injured people have already been evacuated to Kathmandu for further treatment.

Government Mobilizes Emergency Response

The government has directed all relevant agencies to prioritize search and rescue, medical treatment, relief distribution, and restoration of essential infrastructure.

Free medical treatment has been announced for people injured in the disaster.

The government has also said that financial assistance will be provided to the families of those who died according to existing government provisions.

Restoration of damaged roads, bridges, electricity, and communication infrastructure has also been identified as a priority.

Several flood-affected local levels in districts including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, and Tanahun have reportedly been declared disaster-affected areas to facilitate emergency response and relief operations.

Major Impact on Tourism and Transportation

The flood has also disrupted transportation and tourism in northern Nepal.

The Rasuwa region is an important gateway for visitors traveling toward destinations such as Langtang, Gosaikunda, and the Nepal–China border.

Damage to roads and bridges has made travel in several areas unsafe or impossible.

The disruption of the Rasuwagadhi corridor could also affect cross-border trade and tourism between Nepal and China.

As global temperatures rise, glaciers are melting at an accelerated rate, new glacial lakes are forming, and the natural balance of the Himalayan environment is changing.

Although the exact cause of today's Bhotekoshi flood has not yet been scientifically confirmed, Nepali media reports and preliminary assessments have raised the possibility that a glacial lake on the Tibet side may have burst, while an ice avalanche or other glacier-related event may also have triggered the sudden release of water.

Such changes in the Himalayan environment could increase the risk of sudden and destructive floods in the future. Climate change, however, is not the only factor. Deforestation, unplanned infrastructure development, encroachment on natural river channels, and increasing human pressure on fragile ecosystems can make the consequences of natural hazards far more severe.
