Culturally and environmentally diverse, Makalu is the fifth highest mountain of the world which is quite close to the world tallest mountain, Mt. Everest. This is the region where trekkers can bag an experience of the nature as well as the ethnic tribe habitant with there rich culture and warm hospitality.

The Makalu Base Camp Trek takes you deep into one of Nepal’s most remote and breathtaking Himalayan regions. The journey is not only about reaching Makalu Base Camp at 4,870 m, but also about experiencing the changing landscapes along the way from lush forests and terraced hillsides to rugged alpine valleys and glacial terrain. Standing beneath Mt. Makalu (8,485 m) and seeing its towering south face up close is a moment that makes the long journey truly worthwhile.

Along the trail, you’ll walk through Makalu-Barun National Park, cross the challenging ridges around Khongma Danda, and explore the dramatic Barun Valley surrounded by glaciers, waterfalls, and towering Himalayan peaks. The route also passes through traditional mountain communities such as Seduwa and Tashi Gaun, where life moves at a slower pace and the warmth of local people adds a personal touch to the adventure. Sharing a simple meal at a teahouse or exchanging a few words with villagers often becomes just as memorable as the mountain views.

What makes the Makalu Base Camp Trek special is the sense of remoteness, challenge, and genuine connection it offers. The quieter trails allow you to experience the Himalayas away from the crowds, while each demanding climb and peaceful valley becomes part of your own story. From the first flight to Tumlingtar to the final views of the mountains, this trek offers not just spectacular scenery, but a chance to slow down, meet people, challenge yourself, and experience a different side of Nepal.

We should be prepared ahead during the trek as sometimes the weather might be the hindrance because as the trial ascends towards higher altitude, one might suffer from altitude sickness and diverse weather conditions. This area is blessed with diversity of natural vegetation, culture and life style of local residents. This trek is totally isolated from the modern society so that few trekkers are travelled and used to stay at the tented camp. After the numerous adventurous experiences, the journey ends at the base camp from where one can see the majestic views of Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. One should visit this area once in a life time to experience the overall ups and downs of nature. We provide you the best help and support during the trekking as our staffs are well experienced and habituated with year’s long services.

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, our representative will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. Kathmandu, Nepal’s vibrant capital, is the starting point for your journey to the remote and spectacular Makalu region. After checking in, you can rest and recover from your journey or take a short walk around the nearby area.

In the evening, you will meet your trekking guide for a brief orientation about the Makalu Base Camp Trek, including the route, daily walking schedule, necessary equipment, and general trekking preparations. You can also use the remaining time to make any last-minute arrangements before heading toward the Makalu-Barun region. The day is kept relaxed so you can rest well before the journey begins.

02Day
  • Max. Altitude:1,560 m
  • Duration:6–8 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge

After breakfast, take an early morning scenic flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, a gateway to eastern Nepal and the Makalu region. As the flight progresses, enjoy aerial views of the rolling hills and Himalayan landscapes before landing at Tumlingtar Airport.

From Tumlingtar, continue the journey by private 4WD vehicle toward Num, passing through rural settlements, terraced hillsides, and winding mountain roads. The drive offers a glimpse into the landscapes and traditional lifestyle of eastern Nepal as you gradually approach the starting point of the Makalu Base Camp Trek.

Upon reaching Num, settle into the local teahouse and take time to rest and prepare for the first day of trekking. Num marks the beginning of your journey deeper into the remote Makalu-Barun region.

03Day
  • Max. Altitude:1,510 m
  • Duration:5–6 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge

After breakfast, begin your Makalu Base Camp Trek with a scenic yet challenging walk from Num to Seduwa. The trail initially descends steeply through terraced fields and forested hills toward the Arun River. After crossing a suspension bridge over the river, the route climbs steadily through lush forests and traditional mountain settlements toward Seduwa.

Along the way, you’ll experience the peaceful rural landscapes of the Makalu region, with views of terraced farmland, cardamom plantations, and surrounding green hills. As you approach Seduwa, the trail becomes more gradual, allowing you to settle into the rhythm of the trek.

Seduwa is an important village and checkpoint on the route to Makalu Base Camp, making it a perfect place to rest and prepare for the higher elevations ahead.

04Day
  • Max. Altitude:2,070 m
  • Duration:5–6 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge

After breakfast, continue your journey from Seduwa to Tashi Gaun, following a beautiful trail through the lush landscapes of the Makalu-Barun region. The route gradually climbs through dense forests, terraced farmland, and small mountain settlements, with occasional views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

As you gain elevation, the landscape becomes increasingly remote and peaceful. You’ll pass through traditional villages and forests of rhododendron, bamboo, and other Himalayan vegetation before reaching Tashi Gaun, one of the last major permanent settlements on the route to Makalu Base Camp.

Take the afternoon to relax at the teahouse, explore the village, and prepare for the more demanding high-altitude sections ahead.

05Day
  • Max. Altitude:2,070 m
  • Duration:2–3 hours (optional hike)
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge

Today is a well-deserved acclimatization and rest day at Tashi Gaun, allowing your body to adjust to the increasing altitude before you move into the higher sections of the Makalu Base Camp route.

After breakfast, you can take a short acclimatization hike around the village and nearby hills rather than remaining completely inactive. The gentle hike provides opportunities to explore the traditional Sherpa settlement, observe local mountain life, and enjoy views of the surrounding forests and Himalayan landscape.

The remainder of the day is reserved for relaxation, hydration, and preparing your trekking gear for the challenging days ahead. Your guide will also brief you on altitude awareness and the upcoming trail toward Khongma Danda.

06Day
  • Max. Altitude:3,500 m
  • Duration:6–7 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge

After breakfast, begin the first major ascent of the Makalu Base Camp Trek, heading from Tashi Gaun toward Khongma Danda. The trail climbs steadily through dense rhododendron, oak, and fir forests, with increasingly dramatic views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape.

As you gain altitude, the forest gradually gives way to more open mountain terrain. The steep and sometimes rugged trail makes this one of the more challenging days of the trek, but the changing scenery and peaceful wilderness make the effort worthwhile.

Upon reaching Khongma Danda, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and ridges. Spend the evening resting and acclimatizing to the higher elevation in preparation for the high passes ahead.

07Day
  • Max. Altitude:3,610 m
  • Duration:6–7 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge

After breakfast, set out from Khongma Danda toward Dobato, one of the most scenic and challenging sections of the Makalu Base Camp Trek. The trail climbs and descends across a series of rugged ridges and high passes, including the Shipton La pass section, where the landscape opens up to spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

The route takes you through alpine terrain, with steep stone steps, exposed ridgelines, and forested sections along the way. As you continue toward Dobato, you’ll notice the vegetation becoming thinner and the mountain environment more pronounced.

After several hours of trekking, arrive at Dobato, a small and remote mountain settlement. Enjoy a warm meal and a well-earned rest while taking in the peaceful surroundings.

08Day
  • Max. Altitude:3,557 m
  • Duration:6–7 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge

After breakfast, continue your journey from Dobato to Yangle Kharka, descending gradually into the spectacular Barun Valley. The trail passes through dense rhododendron, fir, and pine forests, with the sound of rushing streams and waterfalls accompanying you along the way.

As you descend, the landscape becomes greener and more dramatic, with steep mountain cliffs and the Barun River gradually coming into view. This section offers a wonderful contrast to the rugged high-altitude terrain experienced around Khongma Danda.

Following the trail deeper into the remote Makalu-Barun National Park, you’ll eventually reach Yangle Kharka, a peaceful grazing area surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. Enjoy the tranquil setting and rest well for the gradual ascent toward higher elevations in the coming days.

09Day
  • Max. Altitude:4,410 m
  • Duration:6–7 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge

After breakfast, continue deeper into the remote Barun Valley as you trek from Yangle Kharka to Langmale Kharka. The trail gradually climbs through increasingly rugged alpine terrain, following the Barun River and passing beneath towering cliffs and dramatic Himalayan peaks.

As you gain altitude, the dense forests gradually give way to alpine meadows, rocky landscapes, and glacial surroundings. Along the route, you can enjoy impressive views of Mt. Makalu, Peak 6, Peak 7, and other surrounding peaks. The changing landscape makes this one of the most scenic sections of the trek.

The increasing altitude makes the day more demanding, so maintaining a steady pace and staying well hydrated is important. Upon reaching Langmale Kharka, settle into the teahouse and rest while taking in the spectacular mountain scenery.

10Day
  • Max. Altitude:4,870 m
  • Duration:6–7 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge or basic mountain accommodation at Makalu Base Camp

After an early breakfast, begin one of the most anticipated days of your Makalu Base Camp Trek as you make your way from Langmale Kharka to Makalu Base Camp. The trail gradually climbs through the remote upper Barun Valley, surrounded by rugged moraines, glaciers, rocky slopes, and towering Himalayan peaks.

As you approach the base camp, the magnificent Mt. Makalu (8,485 m) comes into full view, along with dramatic peaks such as Peak 6 and Peak 7. The trail becomes more rugged at higher elevations, requiring a steady pace and careful footing.

After several hours of trekking, you’ll reach Makalu Base Camp at 4,870 m, situated beneath the impressive south face of Mt. Makalu. Take time to appreciate the breathtaking mountain panorama and the vast glacial landscape before settling into your accommodation for the night.

11Day
  • Max. Altitude:4,870 m
  • Duration:3–4 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge or basic mountain accommodation at Makalu Base Camp

Today is dedicated to exploring the spectacular surroundings of Makalu Base Camp, giving you time to experience the raw beauty of the high Himalayas without the pressure of a long trekking day. After breakfast, take a short hike around the base camp and nearby viewpoints, depending on weather and trail conditions.

Enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Makalu (8,485 m), the world's fifth-highest mountain, along with the surrounding peaks, glaciers, and rugged landscapes of the upper Barun Valley. You can also explore the glacial terrain and capture memorable photographs of Makalu's impressive south face.

The day also provides valuable time for acclimatization and recovery at high altitude. Spend the afternoon relaxing at camp, staying hydrated, and preparing for the return journey.

12Day
  • Max. Altitude:3,557 m
  • Duration:6–7 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge

After breakfast, begin your return journey from Makalu Base Camp to Yangle Kharka, retracing the scenic trail through the upper Barun Valley. The route gradually descends from the high-altitude alpine landscape, passing rocky moraines, glacial terrain, and dramatic mountain scenery.

As you lose elevation, the landscape slowly becomes greener, and the trail follows the Barun River through the remote valley. You’ll once again enjoy impressive views of Mt. Makalu and the surrounding Himalayan peaks, but from a different perspective on the descent.

After several hours of trekking, arrive at Yangle Kharka, where you can relax and enjoy a warm meal at the teahouse. The lower elevation also provides a welcome opportunity to recover after spending time at Makalu Base Camp.

13Day
  • Max. Altitude:3,500 m
  • Duration:7–8 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge

After breakfast, begin the return journey from Yangle Kharka to Khongma Danda, retracing the trail through the beautiful and remote Makalu-Barun Valley. The route initially follows the Barun River before gradually ascending through dense rhododendron, fir, and pine forests.

As you gain elevation, the landscape transitions from the lush valley into rugged mountain terrain. The trail includes several steep sections and passes through the remote Dobato area before continuing toward the higher ridges of Khongma Danda. Along the way, enjoy views of the surrounding mountains, forests, and deep Himalayan valleys.

After a challenging day on the trail, arrive at Khongma Danda and settle into your teahouse for a well-earned rest.

14Day
  • Max. Altitude:1,510 m
  • Duration:7–8 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse/Lodge

After breakfast, begin your descent from Khongma Danda to Seduwa, leaving the high mountain terrain behind as you gradually return to the lower elevations of the Makalu region. The trail descends through dense rhododendron, oak, and fir forests, with occasional views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

The route follows a series of steep and winding sections before reaching the greener landscapes around Tashi Gaun. After a short rest, continue toward Seduwa, passing traditional villages, terraced fields, and peaceful forest trails along the way.

Reaching Seduwa marks another important milestone in your return journey. Enjoy a relaxing evening at the teahouse and take some time to recover after the long descent.

15Day
  • Max. Altitude:Approx. 860 m

Gracias Gokul, Shyam y Outshine Adventure Team.
